The Chicago Cubs are on a roll. They came into this week hoping for big things against the San Francisco Giants at home so they can solidify their playoff positioning.

Playing well against the Giants would be one thing. Sweeping them out of Chicago would be another and that is exactly what they did.

On Monday and Tuesday, they earned some big wins that set up a huge opportunity for them on Wednesday.

Jordan Wicks was on the mound for the Cubs in this one and they spotted him a 3-0 lead early. He allowed nine hits (no walks) which isn’t ideal but only two runs crossed the plate which is all that really matters.

The Chicago Cubs needed a big performance on Wednesday afternoon.

He got the Cubs through 6.2 before David Ross made a switch. The bullpen shut the door from there.

The Cubs won the game by a final score of 8-2. Those 8 runs scored came thanks to big days from Seiya Suzuki, Ian Happ, and Cody Bellinger amongst others.

Miguel Amaya also deserves some praise. The catcher batting ninth hit a big-time home run. Bellinger also added a long shot of his own.

Following this sweep, the Giants are in big trouble. They now trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by 15.5 games and are 2.5 games out of a Wild Card spot that they previously had before the series started. That is now six straight losses for them.

As for the Cubs, they are now only 1.5 games out of first place in the National League Central as the Milwaukee Brewers lost.

They are also currently holding the second of three Wild Card spots. They are currently 4.0 games clear of the playoff line.

With less than a month left in the season, they are in a great spot. It makes it even better that they have now won four in a row and are 7-3 in their last ten. It makes their little slump there a few games ago feel like a really long time ago.

From here, the Cubs will stay home and get ready for a big series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. That is another series in which they can help bury a Wild Card hopeful as they are only 1.0 game back as of right now.

This is a great thing for the Cubs as they sweep the Giants in the early stages of September. Their confidence as a team right now is as good as it can be. With the playoffs fast approaching, this team could be ready for big things.
