We came into the 2023 Chicago Bears Training Camp knowing for sure that Justin Fields was going to be the starting quarterback for this team.

Not only are they going to have him for this season, they are hoping that he is a franchise guy for them. There are some promising signals but there is plenty of room for improvement.

We also assumed that P.J. Walker was going to be the backup quarterback and Nathan Peterman was going to be the third-stringer.

Tyson Bagent came into the season from Shepherd as an undrafted free-agent which made him the clear longshot of the group.

The Chicago Bears made a decision at the backup quarterback position.

Of course, sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. Bagent played amazingly in the preseason and started to turn some heads.

It didn’t help that Walker was mostly terrible for most of the preseason in line with Bagent dominating.

Keeping Bagent and cutting Walker felt like a move the Bears wouldn’t have the courage to make but it seems as if they did.

Ryan Poles always does what he thinks is best and he should be respected for that. On Sunday, he has made that decision.

Walker was cut and they have kept Bagent. That also means they kept Peterman. Peterman was always going to be the third guy because he is well-liked and great with the clipboard.

This is really good to see for the Bears. Although Walker was five months into a two-year contract, they made this move which is clearly the right one.

What is the point of the preseason if guys can’t earn and lose jobs? Walker lost his job as the backup and Bagent won it.

Walker is not the only confirmed cut right now either. Alex Leatherwood and Gabe Houy are both guys who were sent packing as well. This isn’t the fun part of the preseason but it is business.

Now, we will still see some more cuts before Tuesday which is never fun to see. However, the backup QB spot in Chicago is settled.

With the way Justin Fields plays his game, it doesn’t hurt to be somewhat confident that Bagent can play a series or two here and there.
