Chicago Bears fans are obsessed with backup quarterbacks.

That is not their fault.

Any team that has had the quarterback misery such as the Bears would lead their fanbase to obsess over the next option as opposed to the starting quarterback.

Undoubtedly, there will be a Bob that calls into 670 The Score on Monday morning and professes that rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent should be given an opportunity to be the Bears’ starting quarterback over Justin Fields.

Looking beyond the meatball takes, Bagent is making a strong case to make the Bears’ 53-man roster.

No, not as the team’s starting quarterback but as the backup to Fields.

Tyson Bagent is quickly becoming the standout of Pre-Season games for the Chicago Bears.

The surprise on Saturday in the Bears’ game against the Indianapolis Colts was that Bagent was the second quarterback to enter the game after veteran PJ Walker got the start.

For the second consecutive week, Bagent outplayed Walker by a clear margin. Bagent completed 90% of his passes while totaling 76 passing yards. Bagent also showed his ability to be an innovator on offense as he scrambled for a 2-yard touchdown after orchestrating a 17-play, 92-yard drive.

The type of composure that Bagent showed on Saturday is what many Bears’ beat reporters have said that the quarterback has had throughout the entire training camp for the team. That may be the reason why Bears’ head coach Matt Eberflus has not ruled out the idea that Bagent may start the season as the primary backup to Fields.

The pushback to that idea is that the Bears should want a backup quarterback that can start in place of an injured Fields and go .500 in a scenario where the starting quarterback is out multiple games. The rebuttal to that is that if Field goes down with an injury that forces him to be sidelined for multiple games, the Bears’ season is likely over regardless.

Bagent has outperformed Walker at every level of mini-camp and training camp and that has proven to be the case through the first two Pre-Season games as well. Normally, Bears fans’ obsession with backup quarterbacks is toxic but in the case of Bagent, they may be warranted.
