The Chicago Cubs are continuing to make some additions and they continue to be involved in some rumors. They added a third baseman but they could use a starter and some more bullpen help.

It will be interesting to see what they manage to do before the deadline comes and goes. The fact that they are buyers is great because that means that they forced Jed Hoyer’s hand by winning.

There is a new rumor out there that might get Cubs fans excited. An old friend seems to be on the radar. The rumor comes from Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

That player is Andrew Chafin. He played for the Chicago Cubs in parts of 2020 and 2021 before being traded away halfway through the latter season.

The Chicago Cubs would love to add Andrew Chafin back into the mix.

He has spent the 2023 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks which was his original team from 2014-2020. In between, he had a cup of coffee with the Oakland A’s and Detroit Tigers.

In his stint with the Cubs, he was brilliant. He had a 2.13 ERA with a 0.850 WHIP. He also had 40 strikeouts in 42.0 innings pitched. There is no doubt that he is a solid pitcher and enjoyed playing with the Cubs.

At 33 years old, he still has a lot to offer a Major League Baseball team. The Arizona Diamondbacks are currently tied for the final Wild Card Spot in the National League but they have fallen off a little bit.

They might not be full-blown sellers right now but they clearly feel that they don’t need Chafin right now.

Maybe the Cubs and Diamondbacks could make a pure baseball trade where each team gets something that they need right now. Adding a reliever like Chafin would fit that bill for the Cubs.

Heyman also named Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins in his report about the Cubs potentially being in on Chafin. This will all depend on what the Diamondbacks decide to do with him but the Cubs should be trying to get him if he is available.

It is one thing to add good bullpen help. It is another to add bullpen help in the form of a pitcher that has been there with them before.
