The Chicago White Sox are in the middle of a roster teardown.

General Manager Rick Hahn has already traded Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly, and Kendall Graveman before tomorrow’s trade deadline.

So far, the deals have centered around players set to be free agents after the season. Only Graveman had a guaranteed deal with the team after this off-season. The deals have been made with the intention to retool the roster to compete again in 2024.

While a full-blown teardown along with clearing out the front office is what this franchise desperately needs, a retool does make some sense.

The AL Central likely will still be weak next season. Plus, the Chicago White Sox will have money to spend on free agents in the offseason.

Rick Hahn has cleared out enough payroll that they only have five players set to make over a $5.5 million next season. Tim Anderson and Liam Hendriks have a club option and Mike Clevinger has a mutual option so that number could reach eight players.

Still, the Sox will have money to play with in the offseason.

The problem is Jerry Reinsdorf still owns the team and he has yet to authorize a contract that is worth over $100 million. Do not expect the Sox to be pursuing Shohei Ohtani,

If Hahn sticks to his plan of only trading players with expiring deals, it leaves only Yasmani Grandal and Keynan Middleton as his only trading chips that can bring some value back similar to what he has gotten so far.

Clevinger is pitching well enough that he will probably elect free agency so he can also be moved before tomorrow’s deadline. Anderson’s recent hot streak might not be enough to get Hahn to want to exercise a 14-million-dollar option for next season so he could be traded as well.
