Cubs Rumors: Chicago is making a major trade-deadline mistake
The Chicago Cubs just lost Sunday’s game to the St. Louis Cardinals by a final score of 3-0. St. Louis, who has had a terrible season, literally started to trade away players before that game even ended. Beating them is nothing to write home about.
This loss did snap an eight-game winning streak and are winners of 10 games out of their last 12 which is impressive no matter what but there is something to consider.
Their last three opponents are the Washington Nationals, Chicago White Sox, and St. Louis Cardinals. Those teams are absolutely horrific right now.
The Cubs are certainly capable of beating bad teams which is nice and a good building block but they were well under .500 before this streak.
The Chicago Cubs have a lot going on with the deadline approaching.
On Sunday, we learned that they are going to be buyers at the deadline (or at least stand pat). That means they won’t trade Cody Bellinger or Marcus Stroman. Obviously, this is just a report and anything can change but it seems like that will be the case.
This is going to be a mistake made by the Chicago Cubs. Although they are on this hot streak, their loss on Sunday combined with a Cincinnati Reds win has them 4.0 games out of first place in the NL Central Division. They also are in third so they have to jump two spots in the division.
They are also 3.5 games out of a Wild Card spot with three teams to jump over. That is going to be really hard with some much better competition coming up.
In fact, the Cubs have a three-game series with those Cincinnati Reds starting on Tuesday right after the trade deadline. A bad showing there, with or without additions made, could bury them once again in the race.
Cody Bellinger is having an outstanding season. In fact, he looks close to his former MVP self right now which is impressive as he has fixed his image as an MLB player. He is going to make some good money starting next year.
If the Cubs can’t find a way to extend him or Marcus Stroman (who has an option in 2024), they should be trading them. Losing them for nothing after potentially missing the playoffs is just bad business.
If they extend them, that is one thing. If an extension is not reached (or even talked about) and the trade deadline goes without shipping them out, that will be a mistake. Cubs fans have to just hope that whatever final decision is made leads to them becoming a contending team again soon.
