White Sox Rumors: 3 wild Lucas Giolito trade packages with the Orioles
By Todd Welter
The past says that the Chicago White Sox can get something for Lucas Giolito.
The trade market has not seen a player of Giolito’s talent but with no team control remaining for a long time.
That makes it hard to gauge what the Chicago White Sox could get for Giolito. Last year’s trade market saw a couple of quality arms under team control get moved.
The Minnesota Twins traded their No. 7, No. 18, and No. 23 prospect to the Cincinnati Reds for Tyler Mahle. He was a 2.1 bWAR player when he was moved.
The New Yankees traded their No. 5, No. 10, No. 20, and No. 21 prospects to acquire Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino from the Oakland Athletics. Montas was 29 last season and a 1.9 bWAR player at the time of the deal.
Luis Castillo was the top pitcher on the market at last year’s trade deadline. The Seattle Mariners moved three of their top five prospects to the Reds.
Castillo was also 29 last season and a 3.1 bWAR player when the deal took place. He was also making a little bit more than $7 million last season.
Giolito just turned 29 and any team trading for him would have to pay the remaining balance on his 10.4-million-dollar contract.
That is cheaper than what the Orioles might have to pay Marcus Stroman for the remainder of his deal if they would trade for him from the Chicago Cubs.
Cleveland Guardians starter Shane Bieber is rumored to be on the market. He has another year of team control and is making a little less the Giolito. Although, Bieber just went on the 15-Day IL with an elbow issue.
Since the Orioles need pitching and have a deep prospect pool, the Chicago White Sox could still get a good return for Lucas.
