Blackhawks News: This Patrick Kane update gives more clarity

During the 2022-23 NHL season, we knew that there was a chance that the Chicago Blackhawks traded Patrick Kane to another team as a rental because his contract was expiring.

Well, that did end up coming true. Kane was sent to the New York Rangers right at the trade deadline.

Unfortunately for Kane, the Rangers were eliminated by the New Jersey Devils in seven games which cut his playoff chances short.

Now, Kane is looking for a new contract with an NHL team. The Blackhawks are for sure not bringing him back and it feels unlikely that he goes back to the New York Rangers.

Things are also complicated by the fact that Kane had some off-season hip surgery that is going to take some time to recover. He is going to miss some time at the start of the season no matter where he goes.

As a result of this surgery, he is a risk to sign. He could come in and not be the same or he could find a way to contribute offense once again.

A team will take that chance of course but it is just a matter of who. It doesn’t sound like we are going to find out for a while.

According to a report from ESPN, Patrick Kane’s agent says that he won’t sign until after the season is starting.

This is big news. Early signs suggest that Kane’s recovery is going to be just fine which should allow him to get back to putting up points in the NHL.

This update about waiting until summer is over does give some clarity to his future though. When he feels he is ready to ramp it up again, he will sign with a team and be off to the races.

What teams make the most sense for Kane? Well, offensively gifted teams that can play defense around him make sense. There may be only a few teams that fit that criteria so it will be interesting to see where he lands.

Could the Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings, or Colorado Avalanche be options? They’d certainly be fun places for him to go. As of right now, Kane is focusing on just getting healthy enough to play. It will be great to see this mystery solved at the right time.
