Despite rumors of a potential trade of Zach LaVine or DeMar DeRozan, the Chicago Bulls’ actions this offseason would seem to suggest that the team is more interested in continuity than rebuilding a core that has failed in each of the past two seasons.

The biggest move that the Bulls made this offseason was the re-signing of center Nikola Vucevic to a three-year deal worth $60MM.

That is not meant to slight the Bulls’ free agent additions as the signings of Jevon Carter and Torrey Craig address the team’s need for shooting and defense.

Still, it would seem that the Bulls are depending on the rest of the Eastern Conference coming back to them as opposed to making the leap to join the ranks of the Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Milwaukee Bucks.

That would be the reason why Bulls’ lead basketball executive Arturas Karnisovas’ comments on ESPN 2’s broadcast of the team’s Summer League game on Tuesday against the Sacramento Kings will be upsetting to hear.

There is no question that there is parity in the NBA, especially the Eastern Conference, but the issue is two things in regard to the Bulls.

The Chicago Bulls have a flawed approach to the 2023-2024 NBA season.

The first issue is that the Bulls do not have a clear superstar player that can put them on the same level as the Heat, Bucks, or 76ers. LaVine’s disappearance against the Heat in the play-in game last season further emphasizes the issue with him being the max player for the Bulls and DeRozan’s age and game do not trend well moving forward.

The second issue, and most glaring, is that the Bulls’ current core is not designed to play together without Lonzo Ball being the facilitator. Ball will not play in this upcoming season for the Bulls and his absence will likely further the flawed “your turn, my turn” approach that DeRozan and LaVine have with the team’s offense.

There certainly is parity in the NBA but not for a team in the Bulls that decided to bring back a broken core.
