Chicago Bears Rumors: Ryan Poles should make the call for Danielle Hunter
With Training camp inching closer with each day, there is a bit of excitement around the Chicago Bears. The Wide Receiver room is vastly improved on paper with the addition of D.J. Moore. The offensive line is much improved on paper and you can say the same about the Linebacker and defensive backfield. The team from a talent perspective is vastly well off compared to last season.
Of course with all the needs they had this offseason, and with them having the highest salary cap of any team, to go along with the draft capital thanks to landing the number one overall pick. They still were not able to address all the areas of concern of the team. If you ask any fan or any media member, they will tell you that the pressing need on this roster is at the defensive end. The team signed Demarcus Walker this offseason for significant money.
However, that does not move the needle as far as addressing edge rusher help. The Bears need a difference-maker off the edge. You have to like the moves that they made at defensive tackle, but going into the season counting on Trevis Gipson, Dominique Robinson, and Rasheem Greene is not going to cut it. Especially if the team aspires in winning a division that has suddenly become wide open with the departure of Quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
The Bears could go the free-agent route with Yannick Ngakoue, who is arguably the most attractive name on the market. However, when you take your Madden GM hat off for one minute and ask yourself is it smart to give a player that has played for four different rosters in the last four years a multi-year deal? There is a reason, why the man can’t stick on a roster more than one year despite the sack production.
The Bears should go the trade route and that does not mean spending capital a Chase Young or Byrce Huff.
They should go all in on Minnesota Vikings Edge rusher Danielle Hunter. You probably thinking why would a division rival trade one of their best players to a fellow rival? They have a few big decisions down the line with some key young players.
The obvious one is Justin Jefferson, who very likely is going to reset the WR market when he gets his extension. Another guy they likely will prioritize is T.J. Hockenson, who they gave up a lot to acquire him. It is also very likely that they will want to extend their franchise left tackle Christian Darrishaw to a long-term deal soon. The Vikings want to keep Hunter, but at 28 (will be 29 during the season) not at the expense of losing one of those core guys listed.
The addition of Hunter would give the Bears an established pass rusher that can help them contend in the next few years. It also would not stop the Bears from addressing Edge again in next year’s draft. For the present, if the Bears’ interior rush is much improved with the additions they made this offseason, Hunter’s addition would put this Bears’ defense over the top.
