Chicago Bears veteran wide receiver Darnell Mooney did not participate in the mini-camp portion of the team’s off-season program but should be ready when the team reports to training camp on July 26.

Mooney joined WGN Chicago and stated that he will be ready to practice at the start of training camp.

Mooney also spoke on his recovery from ankle surgery and how he has received assistance from safety Eddie Jackson.

"“There’s been some ups and downs. It’s been a trial. Some things I’ve learned – I’ve enjoyed the journey of it. I’ve enjoyed the process. I’ve learned a lot being able to sit down. You can’t really do too much. Rehabbing my ankle, especially with Eddie, being able to talk through some life things – it’s been amazing.”Darnell Mooney via WGN Sports"

Jackson suffered a linsfranc injury last December that also ended his season early.

Before turning the attention to Mooney, it is encouraging that Jackson took time out of his off-season program to assist the wide receiver with his recovery. Prior to the change in coaching staff last year, Jackson’s role on the Bears’ defensive unit was starting to come into question.

Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney is fully healthy as training camp nears

Jackson embraced the change in coaching staff last season and once again emerged as a leader for the defensive unit. That is no small task for the Bears considering the teardown that the defensive side of the ball saw last season.

Moving back to Mooney, it certainly is encouraging that the wide receiver will be ready for Training Camp. Mooney is entering an important season for his career as his rookie contract expires at the end of the season. With Chase Claypool also set to become a free agent next off-season, the Bears may ultimately decide between Claypool or Mooney in regard to the wide receiver that gets a contract extension.

Mooney could be in a position to have a breakout season with the Bears if fully healthy. The addition of D.J. Moore to the Bears’ offense pushes Mooney into a more natural, secondary receiver role for the Bears. That could create mismatch opportunities for Mooney as he looks to re-establish his connection with quarterback Justin Fields.
