Cubs News: Big history was made in Friday’s road win
The Chicago Cubs are not having this amazing season but there have been some really good moments for a team trying to rebuild.
One of them came on Friday night when they paid a visit to the Bronx which is not somewhere they have visited very often.
The New York Yankees welcomed them in to begin the final series for both teams before the All-Star break.
Former Chicago White Sox ace Carlos Rodon was making his Yankees debut after signing a big contract with them during the off-season before getting hurt.
The Chicago Cubs played very well on the road against the New York Yankees.
Rodon was solid in his Yankees debut as he went 5.1 innings and only allowed two earned runs on four hits with two walks.
He only struck out two but he is still building his stuff back up. He got outs which is what was important for him in his first start.
Luckily, the Cubs’ pitching was even better. Jameson Taillon went 8.0 innings and didn’t allow a single run to his former team. In fact, he only allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four.
Adbert Alzolay shut the door in the 9th and the Cubs beat the Yankees 3-0. It was a very nice performance by Taillon while guys like Nico Hoerner and Cody Bellinger provided just enough offense to get the win.
The thing that makes this victory special is that it is historic. The Cubs had never beaten the Yankees in New York before. They hadn’t played there very often but they were swept every time they did.
It is remarkable that they are just now getting that milestone out of the way but they did it. Now they have a chance to do something even crazier, win a series on the road against the Yankees.
The Yankees are having a down year and are without Aaron Judge right now but that longstanding history still matters. Now, it is the past. The Cubs can finish this series strong.
New York has Gerrit Cole going on Saturday which is never easy. Drew Smyly and the Cubs are going to try their best to get the job done.
