In a move that the Chicago White Sox may be preparing the transition to playing younger players for the second half of the 2023 Major League Baseball season, the team promoted outfield prospect Oscar Colas from Triple-A Charlotte on Monday.

Colas made the White Sox Major League roster out of Spring Training but quickly fell out of favor with manager Pedro Grifol given his offensive struggles and lack of fundamentals at times in the outfield. In 84 plate appearances with the White Sox at the start of the season, Colas slashed .211/.265/.276 with a 50 wRC+ and 1 home run.

It was a disappointing turn of events for a prospect that many pegged to be a favorite for the American League Rookie of the Year award at the start of the season.

With Triple-A Charlotte this season, Colas found some offensive consistency as he slashed .293/.358/.508 with a 112 wRC+ and 9 home runs.

It wasn’t until the month of June that Colas began to find his power in Triple-A. Seven of Colas’ nine home runs on the season for Triple-A Charlotte came during the month of June.

Chicago White Sox outfielder Oscar Colas has returned to the Major League level.

Colas will be taking the place of Clint Frazier on the Major League roster. The offensive struggles that plagued Frazier’s Major League career followed him to his stint with the White Sox as he slashed .197/.303/.242 in 76 plate appearances this season with a wRC+ of 59.

Entering play on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, the White Sox are at the point where they will officially be declared sellers ahead of the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline at the beginning of August. The Major League Baseball All-Star break is next week and the White Sox currently are 12 games under the .500 mark and 6 games behind the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central Division.

Moving forward for the White Sox, the plan should be to get their Major League-ready prospects to the Major League for experience during the second half of the season. Now is the time for the White Sox to give prospects like Colas an extended run in the Major Leagues as they begin to map their off-season strategy out.
