The 2023 NHL Draft is in the books. That means it is time for free agency which begins on Saturday. Unrestricted free agents are now going to sign with teams.

Some teams are going to make poor decisions as they will hand out bad contracts. Good players make good money as they should but they don’t all age well with their contracts.

The Hawks I’ll have to avoid that trouble. Kyle Davidson makes it clear through his moves so far that he is all about signing people to short-term deals. He has done that so far by trading for the rights of players so far this off-season.

It would be nice to see them sign a defenseman or two. There are plenty of guys out there that can come in and help the Hawks develop some of the young defensemen that are coming in.

These three free agents would make perfect sense for them at this point in time:

1. Dmitry Orlov

Dmitry Orlov would make perfect sense for the Chicago Blackhawks in 2022-23.

Dmitry Orlov is a solid defenseman that has been around the block in the NHL. In fact, he has captured a Stanley Cup in addition to being a very good defenseman on a few different teams. Coming to the Chicago Blackhawks right now would make a lot of sense for him.

Orlov is an amazing puck mover. He isn’t an all-world defenseman or anything like that but he puts up points everywhere he goes. It is fun to watch him.

Of course, Orlov started his career with the Washington Capitals and that is who he won the Stanley Cup with. In 2022-23, however, he was traded to the Boston Bruins.

It looked like Orlov and the Bruins were primed for a run at the Cup as they were one of the best regular season teams ever. Unfortunately, they were upset in the first round by the Florida Panthers.

Now, it would be cool to see Orlov take maybe a little extra money to come and mentor some of the young defensemen that Chicago will have this year. He along with Seth Jones and Connor Murphy could help some young players grow their games.
