Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus will get a first-hand look at his former team during the 2023 NFL Pre-Season as the Indianapolis Colts will host the Bears for two joint practices in August.

Eberflus, of course, was the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts before being hired to replace Matt Nagy as the Bears’ head coach.

Joint practices are always an important element of the Pre-Season. For the fans, it allows for an opportunity to get an inside look at another team and there certainly is excitement surrounding the Colts as they head into the 2023 NFL season.

With the fourth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Colts selected University of Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson. Richardson wowed talent evaluators at the NFL Scouting Combine last February and his athleticism has drawn comparisons to Bears’ quarterback Justin Fields.

The Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts will have joint practices in August.

Prior to the Bears trading the No.1 overall selection in the draft to the Carolina Panthers, some Bears fans were fantasizing about the idea of the team already moving on from Fields in favor of Richardson. Such a decision would have been a mistake for the Bears but it will be exciting to see the two quarterbacks on the same field this August.

Similarly to the Bears with Fields during his rookie season, there have been questions as to whether Richardson is able to be the Day 1 starter at the quarterback position for the Colts. The Colts fully intend for Richard to be their starting quarterback at the start of the season but there have been concerns over his development after the team’s mini-camp practices. The team also signed former Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback Gardner Minshew.

Fields is no stranger to joint practices. Prior to his first NFL regular season in 2021, Fields and the Bears had joint practices with the Miami Dolphins. With some Dolphins’ beat reporters questioning how Fields’ skillset would translate at the NFL level, the Bears’ quarterback put on a show.
