Blackhawks: 3 free-agent goalies to consider signing
The Chicago Blackhawks have a long way to go before they are a good team. With Connor Bedard on the way, people are excited (and rightfully so) but they have a lot of work to do.
Bedard isn’t a magical person. One elite superstar isn’t going to win you a Stanley Cup. Blackhawks fans should know better than anybody. Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, and Duncan Keith can’t do it all on their own. They need help in every area of the ice.
Well, goaltending is a key position in the National Hockey League. The last two Stanely Cup-winning goaltenders were anything but elite but they were very good when they were needed.
The Blackhawks think they might have some goalies in the system that they like but nothing can be said for sure. Drew Commesso and Arvid Soderblom have a long way to go before they are ready for the big job.
Petr Mrazek is there with one year left on his deal. Alex Stalock is a UFA after having a surprisingly good year but it is unlikely he comes back.
The Chicago Blackhawks may hit the free-agent market for a starting goalie.
The Blackhawks could look for a free-agent goalie to play this year. Arvid Soderblom could easily use another year with the Rockford Ice Hogs. He will certainly play in the NHL this year but for how long?
Drew Commesso is also signed now but he should be getting some AHL time as well. He will likely make his NHL debut at some point but don’t count on him getting regular NHL playing time in his first-year pro.
If the Blackhawks want to consider a free agent for one season, one of these guys might be worth thinking about:
