The Chicago White Sox managerial opening this past off-season was believed to be one of the more coveted jobs given that the White Sox had a core in place that already had expectations of winning the American League Central division.

The White Sox contending window was fully open but there was a crack within the glass left by former manager Tony La Russa. Enter Pedro Grifol as White Sox general manager. Rick Hahn finally had the opportunity to hire his own manager and Grifol seemed like an ideal fit given his foundation was built on playing fundamentally sound baseball.

Of course, nearly halfway through Grifol’s first season as the White Sox manager, the team’s contention window has not only been shut but the glass has shattered. The White Sox 2023 season has been deflating and so when Grifol had this response on Sunday when asked about batting the team’s best hitter, Jake Burger, eighth, he had this to say:

Should have Grifol said that? Probably not, especially given that he was proven wrong immediately as Burger was limited to three at-bats during Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Mariners. But, can Grifol be blamed? No.

The Chicago White Sox’s misery has now placed manager Pedro Grifol on the hot seat.

That is why Jon Heyman’s rebuttal of Grifol’s response during the “Mully and Haugh Show” on 670 The Score is not the answer either.

"“That frustration really showed,” Heyman said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Monday morning. “He had Burger batting eighth, I really don’t know what to make of that other than he’s frustrated. I don’t know if he’s frustrated with his bosses or the questions or what, but it wasn’t a great look. He’s supposed to be a disciplinarian, probably should show some discipline on his own. It’s nice we got a window into his frustration, but I would say if this year doesn’t turn around, he could be one-and-done.”Jon Heyman via 670 The Score"

So, why did the contention window shatter? That is the answer that the White Sox must ask themselves this winter when they are picking up the pieces. Grifol is not the answer to that question but if it is Hahn, he may find himself equally as unemployed as the White Sox general manager.
