One of the wishes that the Chicago White Sox had for the remainder of their 2023 regular season came true on Sunday afternoon as starting pitcher Lance Lynn was brilliant against the Seattle Mariners.

Lynn allowed 3 runs in 7 innings of work against the Mariners on Sunday but he tied a single-game franchise record for the White Sox by totaling 16 strikeouts. It was a mark that no White Sox starting pitcher has touched since Jack Harshman did so in 1954. In addition to the 16 strikeouts, Lynn also registered 33 swings and misses and that was the most in a single outing by a pitcher in all of Major League Baseball this season.

So with Lynn looking dominant on Sunday, one would think that the White Sox cruised their way to victory, right? Wrong. The White Sox offense struggled to score runs on Sunday afternoon and that resulted in a 5-1 loss.

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Lance Lynn made history on Sunday but it was not enough to correct the team’s struggles.

For the White Sox, Sunday’s loss was more of the same for how their season has gone thus far. When one issue appears to be fixed, another surfaces. In this case, Lynn returned to his old form but the team’s offensive struggles continued and the effort by their starting pitcher was wasted.

White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson did not play in Sunday’s game against the Mariners and it would appear that a move to the IL may be forthcoming. Reports on Twitter on Monday morning are that infield prospect Jose Rodriguez will be joining the White Sox for their series against the Texas Rangers.

Rodriguez entered the 2023 season as the sixth-best prospect in the White Sox organization according to FanGraphs. Rodriguez has shown power at each level of the White Sox and that has continued this season with Double-A Birmingham. Rodriguez has 9 home runs in 201 plate appearances with the Birmingham Barons this season and has split time between second base and shortstop.
