Chicago Bears: This rookie could do big things in 2023 and beyond
The Chicago Bears added to the receiver room this past April. In the 4th round of the Draft, they selected Cincinnati receiver Tyler Scott.
Scott excelled at the combine. He ran a 4.44 40-yard dash with a 1.51 10-yard split. He finished with a vertical jump of 39.5” and an 11’1” broad jump.
In his Senior year for the Bearcats, Scott finished with 54 receptions, 899 receiving yards, and 9 touchdowns. He possesses good speed with the ability to make guys miss in space. His skill set compliments Luke Getsys’ offense, which includes a lot of jet sweeps and quick screens.
Scott was also a huge deep ball threat during his time at Cincinnati. Many people had a day two draft grade on him and the Bears were able to pick him up early on Day three at 134 overall.
Scott will play a rotational role early on
It’s safe to say the receiving room is crowded. DJ Moore, Darnell Mooney, and Chase Claypool will get most of the reps. I see Scott getting around 5-7 snaps a game to start the season.
Luke Getsy could utilize his quickness on screenplays or occasionally call his number for a deep shot down the field. However, if one of the three starting receivers suffers an injury, Tyler Scott will get his chance.
Scott could jump into a big role in 2024
Darnell Mooney and Chase Claypool are expected to be free agents next off-season. While it’s likely Ryan Poles gets an extension done with one of them, it’s unlikely he extends both.
If he impresses in the opportunities given to him this season, Tyler Scott could be thrust into the starting role in 2024.
When Ryan Poles selected him with the 134th overall pick, he envisioned that Scott has the ability to be a starting wide receiver in the NFL.
The Bears recently found success in the later rounds at the receiver position. While Ryan Poles wasn’t the General Manager, Darnell Mooney was a 5th round Draft pick in 2020 by the team. The interesting thing is that analysts are comparing Tyler Scott to Mooney.
In 2020, Mooney immediately took on the wide receiver two role. Scott might not have that opportunity but the talent is definitely there. Just like Mooney, Scott made dynamic plays every week in college and that could translate to the NFL.
Tyler Scott is a great number-four receiver right now and has the upside to be a solid player for years to come.
