Moves the Chicago Bulls should make instead of re-signing Nikola Vucevic: Trade DeMar DeRozan, commit to youth movement

In a perfect world, the Bulls would first trade guard Zach LaVine, because his contract is one the team is going to regret having on the books, very soon. But, it’s already apparent that Chicago could end up keeping LaVine as their number one option and building around him.

There have been plenty of rumors about the Bulls trading DeRozan this offseason, with a team like the Phoenix Suns making a ton of sense; for example, a Deandre Ayton for DeRozan swap.

The Bulls should indeed try and move DeRozan, who enters his final year under contract with Chicago. DeRozan is still playing excellent ball, and could help any contender get over the top. He is well-worth at least a first-round pick, too. Think of Kyrie Irving going for a first rounder last year, and now picture a price tag on DeRozan.

The Bulls are also starving for draft capital, right now, thanks to the Vucevic trade. Isn’t that some irony? If they were to trade DeRozan, they’d net some draft capital to be able to use in the immediate future, rather than re-committing to multiple years of more mediocrity. Keeping Vucevic and DeRozan would only be pushing any success further into the future, because it’s been clear that this isn’t working.
