Chicago Bears: Way too early 53-man roster projection
By Todd Welter
As you scroll through, please note that starters will always be in bold…
Two Roster Spots: Justin Fields and P.J. Walker
Fields is the unquestioned franchise quarterback. Poles has upgraded the talent around him and now it is on Fields to take the next step towards becoming an MVP quarterback.
He must get better at getting rid of the ball quicker, completing his check-down passes, and reading defenses. If he can do that, Fields has the chance to become the best quarterback in the division with his playmaking ability.
Fields is looking impressive in OTAs (although he is throwing with no pass rush).
Walker was signed in the offseason to backup Fields. He has some skills that are like Fields, so the offense will not have to be altered too much if Fields goes down for some time with an injury.
Nathan Peterman is back again and is currently the third-string quarterback on the unofficial depth chart. Even though the NFL made a rule change to allow for an emergency quarterback, it will be highly unlikely the Chicago Bears carry a veteran quarterback like Peterman on the active roster.
Tyson Bagent needs to show something in the preseason to earn a possible practice squad spot.
