5 veteran pass rushers the Chicago Bears can still sign
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears haven’t addressed their pass rush as well as some fans may have wanted them to, this offseason.
But, general manager Ryan Poles has acknowledged the fact that he might not be done in that area, and he understands that it’s not a position of strength — yet.
At the moment, the Bears have DeMarcus Walker (newly-signed as of 2023), Trevis Gipson, Dominique Robinson and Rasheem Greene (also newly-signed this year) as their top four guys. Undrafted rookie D’Anthony Jones is a favorite to make some noise this summer, but the Bears still need to add a legitimate force to the group.
Could they look at potentially making a trade? If not, the free agent pool is where they’re going to look. Fortunately, there are some great veteran names still available in free agency.
Veteran pass rushers the Chicago Bears can still sign: Jadeveon Clowney
I think we have all gotten past the whole “bust” conversation with Jadeveon Clowney. At this stage in his career, he is what he is. Clowney is still a disruptor, but hasn’t put up the sack numbers everyone expected him to as a pro.
Still, he’s worthy of a spot on an NFL roster and could greatly help the Bears while playing meaningful snaps. Last year, with the Cleveland Browns, Clowney ended with just 2.0 sacks. But, the year prior, he totaled 9.0, which was tied for the second-most of his career.
He’s never had double-digit sacks, but Clowney is still a physical, quick edge defender who can give the Bears that veteran they’re needing. Is he the best option available? Probably not, but the 30-year-old has more football left in the tank, no doubt.
At this point in the offseason, Clowney would also come fairly cheap, too, especially considering the low production from 2022 we’re going off of.
