Alex Leatherwood might surprise and make the Chicago Bears 2023 roster

When the Bears brought in Alex Leatherwood last year, he was the ultimate low-risk signing. Leatherwood is another former Alabama player and, unlike Lewis, he went in the first round, but back in 2021.

Leatherwood has played both guard and tackle over his career, but most agree that he fits best at guard in the NFL. The Raiders tried playing him at tackle, and he looked out of place. Depending on where he ends up playing in Chicago, this season, Leatherwood might just surprise. He’s another player who is looking at the end of his professional career, real soon, unless he makes drastic improvement.

The Bears currently have Nate Davis, Lucas Patrick and Teven Jenkins as their top three guards. If they chose to keep a fourth guard, or even if they wanted someone with a little versatility, Leatherwood could make sense.

Obviously, his best position is on the inside. But, in a pinch, Leatherwood will offer some flexibility as a tackle. Injuries happen, and Chicago would be fortunate having someone who has at least played both spots if something were to happen down the line.
