Justin Jones

Justin Jones might not be as needed in 2023 following the new additions.

The only remaining defensive tackle left from the 2022 season, Justin Jones was expected to play significant snaps for this Bears defensive line. At least that was before Ryan Poles drafted three defensive tackles in the 2023 NFL draft.

Gervon Dexter was the first defensive tackle taken by Poles. A lengthy and explosive athlete out of the University of Florida, Dexter is capable of both rushing the passer and stuffing the run.

His college sack numbers weren’t eye-popping, but this was due to the style of defense he was asked to play.

Zacch Pickens was taken just 11 spots behind Dexter. Another explosive athlete out of the SEC, Pickens is also expected to see some playing time as a rookie.

Another physical freak, Pickens is expected to do it all as a rookie. During his week at the Reese’s Senior Bowl, Pickens held his own with some of the top names of the draft. He really stood out during the pass rush drills, showing his length and speed off the ball.

Travis Bell was the final of the three defensive tackles taken. Out of Kennesaw State University, Bell didn’t get the same publicity as the other top defensive tackles received.

This doesn’t mean anything, however, because this dude can make plays. In five seasons with the Owls, Bell played in 44 games totaling 11 sacks and 24.5 tackles for loss. Bell is more of a work in progress than Dexter and Pickens but he is still part of the position battle.

At least initially, Jones is still expected to start. But with a group of young athletes coming into Chicago, his job is far from secure.
