The other controversy is there are a lot of hockey observers who believe the Chicago Blackhawks do not deserve the No. 1 pick after the Kyle Beach scandal.

What the organization did to their former No. 1 draft pick will forever be a stain on the franchise. The organization willingly covered up the team’s video coach alleged sexual assault of Beach all for the sake of making sure there were no distractions during the team’s quest for the Stanley Cup in 2010.

The key players in the cover-up, team president John McDonough, general manager Stan Bowman, and head coach Joel Quenneville are no longer with the team. Only Bowman was truly held accountable for his actions by losing his job, and he was allowed to resign. It took the team hiring a law firm to uncover the extent of his involvement for Bowman to be shown the door.

McDonough may have been fired for his involvement, but it was never cited as a main reason. Quenneville was fired in 2018 for the team’s slow start. Although, he did resign as the Florida Panthers head coach after his involvement was detailed. In addition, Bettman has to approve Quenneville being allowed to coach in the NHL.

The Hawks organization was only fined $2 million by the NHL. A monetary slap on the wrist.
