Trading Lucas Giolito would have some pros and cons for the Chicago White Sox.

Instead of talking about a possible extension, the Sox are leaking that they might trade him if they are out of the playoff race by the August 1st trade deadline.

It would make sense to move Giolito if there is no hope of making the playoffs by late July. Plus, if he has made it clear he will test the market, it would be worth it to get something in return and not risk losing Giolito for nothing.

Plus, he could be one of the best-starting pitchers available at the deadline.

The problem is the Chicago White Sox do not have a lot of internal options to replace him in the rotation.

Garrett Crochet could potentially be moved to the starting rotation but he is coming back from Tommy John surgery and has yet to make his debut this season.

It means the Chicago White Sox will probably have to sign a free agent in the offseason to replace Giolito.

This comes down to the probability that Reinsdorf does not want to pay Giolito. Spotrac projects Lucas could be in line for a six-year deal at around $109 million.

Considering the Sox are one of the few franchises remaining to not sign a player to a contract over $100 million, do not expect Giolito to be the first player to get one from the organization.

The Sox have been notoriously cost-conscious when it comes to starting pitchers. That is one reason it seems like Giolito’s days are numbered on the Southside.
