Reasons to worry about Chicago Bears first-round pick Darnell Wright: Powerful, but not much punch or technique

I touched on this previously, but Wright is definitely a big, strong dude. He stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 333 pounds. As a pass blocker, going up against the likes of a bull rusher or your average-sized 3-4 outside linebacker, Wright is going to stand his ground.

If he is taken head on by an opposing pass rusher, Wright will be just fine. He’ll be able to keep his block and won’t be knocked backward more than on the rare occasion.

But, Wright can’t use sheer power at the NFL level. He is a strong lineman, but he’s going to need to hone in on his technique a bit more. When it comes to his hands, he doesn’t pack as much of a punch as you’d like to see. And, with the types of pass rushers he’s going to be facing, he’ll need to sharpen his techniques quite a bit more.

If Wright can improve his quickness over the course of this summer, along with being coached up on his hand technique, he’ll give fans no reason to worry even as a rookie.
