Chicago Bears: 3 reasons to be weary of Darnell Wright pick

Reasons to worry about Chicago Bears first-round pick Darnell Wright: Not the quickest of feet, or in space
Since Luke Getsy took over as the Bears’ offensive coordinator last year, fans have been excited to see this team run a zone scheme, especially with a mobile quarterback like Justin Fields. Last season, we saw just the tip of the iceberg in terms of potential.
Between Fields’ athleticism and the Bears’ running back depth, the team ran it down opposing teams’ throats. Wright comes in without elite quickness or speed, which can be a problem when running an offense like Chicago’s.
Because Wright is more of a big, strong and powerful blocker, he lacks the functional speed to work against top-end pass rushers who are more technique-based than your average bull rusher. Wright is going to have to improve his quickness as a blocker, especially in space, because he’s going to see Fields take off at the drop of a hat at times and need to keep up.
Now, because Fields is so fast and athletic, Wright’s lack of speed can be masked to a point. However, we saw last year that Fields’ speed will only take him so far. NFL defenders are a different breed, and they’re also very fast. Wright will have to adjust in order to keep up with blocking the faster guys, especially on the edge.
