Chicago Bears Draft: Can’t-miss Day 2 prospects worth trading up for
By Ryan Heckman
Day 2 prospects the Chicago Bears should trade up for in the 2023 NFL Draft: Joey Porter Jr., CB, Penn State
Maybe the biggest surprise, in terms of player left on the board after Round 1, is Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. There was some outlets that even projected him inside the top 15 picks, and to be frank, you might have been able to make an argument for the Bears to look at him at no. 9 overall.
Porter would immediately start at the other outside cornerback spot with Jaylon Johnson, giving way for Kyler Gordon to be their full-time slot corner. Porter plays with a similar mentality as his father, the longtime Pittsburgh Steelers great.
This is a prototypical outside corner if you’ve ever seen one, standing over 6-foot-2 and possessing ideal size to match up with all types of receivers. Porter is a highly-aggressive and physical cornerback who will not back down, even against the most imposing wide receivers. And that should come as no surprise, knowing who his father was on the football field.
The biggest reason Porter fell out of the first round might be the fact that he is known to be a little “handsy” at times. If he can hone in on that weakness, Porter has all the makings of a great NFL cornerback and is well-worth spending additional capital on if you’re Ryan Poles.
