Chicago Bears Rumors: Chase Young trade scenario gaining attention
By Ryan Heckman
It’s Draft Day, and that means plenty of rumors flying. If you thought the past few weeks were crazy, buckle up. The rumors will only continue to get more and more plentiful as the day goes on.
The Chicago Bears are one of the most powerful teams in terms of draft capital and financial room, holding 10 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft and having plenty of money they can still spend.
That’s one of the reasons a hypothetical trade between Chicago and the Washington Commanders is starting to gain a lot of attention across social media and amongst Bears fans.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay had an idea in regards to the Commanders sending star pass rusher Chase Young to the Bears in exchange for a couple of second-round picks. It was also just announced that the Commanders aren’t picking up Young’s fifth-year option, which is a huge signal that a trade could be coming.
“Rather than take the risk on Young returning to full strength, the club should accept a second-rounder from a team with more financial flexibility—such as the Chicago Bears, who desperately need help on the edge after finishing dead-last in sacks this past season—to both recoup some value on the investment and clear cap space,” Kay said.
The Chicago Bears should absolutely shake up the 2023 NFL Draft by trading for Chase Young
The Bears need help at edge rusher, and there might be no better gamble to take than trading a couple of second rounders for an absolutely dominant force like Young.
Of course, the gamble portion comes when talking about Young’s injury history. It’s an unfortunate part of his story, but Young is still just 24 years old as of a few days ago. The last two years have been tough for the former Ohio State standout, but if he’s healthy now, then he’s worth the risk.
The Bears could easily afford to give up one of their second rounders this year, and next, for a guy who could potentially be a Defensive Player of the Year candidate. The fact that Young has dealt with injuries also allows the Bears financial flexibility when working on an extension for him.
Ryan Poles would be able to build incentives into the deal, and possibly not give out an absurd amount of guaranteed money, simply because injuries have been an issue. A contract structured in a way where Chicago could get out of it comfortably would work to their advantage. And, from Young’s perspective, he’d at least have a new deal, whereas he was set to hit free agency in Washington after this season.
