The Chicago Bears don’t need to draft a wide receiver in the first round anymore.

For a while, it seemed to make sense for the Chicago Bears to consider drafting a wide receiver in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Justin Fields needs weapons but he needed them a lot more before the first overall pick trade. In that deal, the Bears added DJ Moore to join Darnell Mooney and Chase Claypool. With Cole Kmet as a good (and still developing) tight end, the offense can take a big step.

Drafting Jaxon Smith-Njigba seemed like a good idea once upon a time but they must stay away from him now. Yeah, it would probably excite Fields to bring the Ohio State kid in but we don’t even know for sure if Fields is the guy so it can’t be all about what he wants.

From strictly a football point of view, they shouldn’t select him or any of the other first-round receivers available in the first round. If they take a chance on one later in the draft that would be fine but they can’t on Thursday night.
