Bears News: Carolina Panthers use first pick on a QB
The Chicago Bears started the off-season with the number one overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft because they were the worst team in the league.
It didn’t take long for the speculation to begin. However, they did end up trading the pick. They sent it to the Carolina Panthers for an absolute haul that includes the ninth overall pick this year, a first-round pick next year, and star wide receiver DJ Moore.
The Carolina Panthers used the selection on Thursday night. They made Bryce Young out of the University of Alabama the first overall pick. He had an insane career as a member of the Crimson Tide that led to a lot of winning.
Now, he is the number one pick in the draft. You’d like to think that he is going to be their starter from day one. The last time (and only time) that Carolina made the number one pick, he won an MVP and led them to an NFC title.
Of course, that player was Cam Newton who came from Alabama’s biggest rival, Auburn. The Panthers would love to see Young end up having a similar career to Newton except they’d like to actually win the last game of the season.
Bryce Young was selected with the pick that belonged to the Chicago Bears.
When Young was at Alabama, it was clear that he’d be a first-round quarterback but nobody was sure when he’d go. The Panthers ended up making the pick and helping him realize his dream.
Bears fans will be hoping that year one doesn’t lead to many wins for the Panthers as they’d like that 2024 first-rounder to become a really high pick for Chicago. It will be a long time before we realize whether or not this was a good idea for the Bears to make this trade but what’s done is done.
It will be fun to see how things shake out for both franchises. They will surely meet each other from time to time as they are both in the NFC. No matter what, it would be nice to see this work out for the Chicago Bears. It could lead to sustained success if this works.
Following the pick of Young, the Houston Texans came up to pick. Of course, the Texans gifted the Bears the first pick with their miracle win in the final game of the season.
They selected CJ Stroud out of Ohio State University. Following that, they traded right back up to select Will Anderson Jr. out of Alabama at pick three. It is a wild turn of events. We’ll see what this means for the Bears soon enough.
