Chicago Bulls Rumors: 3 offseason trades sending DeMar DeRozan to Knicks
By Ryan Heckman
Trade Number 2: The Chicago Bulls get another combo of two players and two picks for DeMar DeRozan
That first trade scenario is fairly mild. It’s tough to build a package around a player like DeRozan, whose contract only goes one more year. But, when you look at the Kyrie Irving deal last year, the Brooklyn Nets were able to get a first-round pick for him, so DeRozan would fetch at least that.
Now, in this second trade, Chicago gets a better player than Toppin, and one they can build their future around, too. In this scenario, it’s basically Toppin swapped for guard RJ Barrett.
Barrett signed an extension with the Knicks last year, which starts this upcoming season. It’s relatively friendly, too, with the final year paying him $29 million and initially, starting at $23.8 million this next year.
Barrett, next to Zach LaVine, could end up giving the Bulls one heck of a back court to work with going into the future. With Barrett’s height at 6-foot-6, he might even be able to play the three spot. Then, thinking about Chicago re-signing Coby White and having all three of those guys going into future years could be exciting.
