Day 2 defensive tackle options for the Chicago Bears in 2023 NFL Draft: Mazi Smith

Smith is coming off a 48-tackle season for the Wolverines, 2.5 of them for a loss. He’s 6’3” 323 pounds, and very quick for his size. He does a good job using his arms to move lineman out of the way to make a tackle. He eats up a lot of space which creates opportunities for others to make a play.

One downside with Smith is he doesn’t make a huge impact when it comes to pass rushing. In 28 straight games, he only had 0.5 sacks. In Matt Eberflus’ defense, you need defensive lineman who can get to the quarterback. But adding a run stuffer to a run defense that was one of the worst in the league last season would not be a bad thing.

There’s a chance that Smith could be taken early in the second round. CBS Sports latest 3 round mock draft has him going 34th overall to the Cardinals.

The Bears earliest pick on day two is 54th overall. However, players fall all the time, and Smith should be one of the Bears top options if available. He’s got a ton of potential and could be the Bears long term solution up front.
