White Sox News: Injury bug bites Tim Anderson and more
By Tim Healey
Chicago White Sox star shortstop Tim Anderson has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a sprain in his left knee.
The team expects him to miss two-to-four weeks. Lenyn Sosa has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to take his roster spot.
Anderson was hurt during Monday’s game against the Minnesota Twins when he attempted to catch a poor throw from Hanser Alberto during a rundown play.
The White Sox struggled with injuries during a disappointing 2022 season in which they finished .500 and the injury bug appears to be back.
The White Sox already have lots of injury trouble two weeks into the season.
Star slugger Eloy Jimenez is already on the injured list with a hamstring issue and third baseman Yoan Moncada is out with back and toe issues. Meanwhile, key reliever Joe Kelly hurt himself running in from the bullpen during a benches-clearing altercation in Pittsburgh.
The White Sox have high expectations for a bounce-back year after falling far short of their goals last season. A change in manager and adjustments to the training staff was supposed to help. Similarly, it was thought that the return of key players from injury would boost the roster.
Instead, we’re less than two weeks into the season, and three starting position players and an important reliever are out. Anderson’s loss especially hurts since he often drives the offense as the leadoff hitter and the injury could’ve been prevented had the throw been better.
The good news is that Jimenez is already taking batting practice, Moncada has not yet been put on the IL, and Sosa is a young prospect getting another opportunity to show what he can do at the big-league level.
It’s also early in the season, so there is plenty of time for Anderson and the others to recover and contribute.
It’s not yet time for a 2022-style panic, though this Sox fan is fighting those familiar bad feelings.
