Chicago Cubs pick up an Opening Day win over a rival
The Chicago Cubs have taken the field for the first time this season and it went as well as they could have possibly hoped for. With the rival Milwaukee Brewers in town at Wrigley Field, the Cubs pulled out a huge win by a final score of 4-0.
Marcus Stroman got the start for the Cubs on the mound and he dominated. He went 6.0 innings of shutout baseball. He had three walks and allowed three hits but had eight strikeouts which helped him earn the win.
Keegan Thompson, Brad Boxberger, and Michael Fulmer came in and shut things down without allowing a run too which was very nice to see for the Cubs.
As for the offense, they hit one of the best pitchers in the world very well. Corbin Burns allowed four runs on four hits and three walks. He only had three strikeouts in the whole game.
Milwaukee’s bullpen didn’t allow a run but Burns allowed enough damage to lose the game in 5.0 innings pitched.
The Chicago Cubs played very well against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday.
Of all the Cubs hitters to play well in this one, Dansby Swanson did the best. The man who earned a lot of money during the offseason made a great first impression on the Wrigley Field crowd as he had three hits with one run scored and one RBI. He was all over the win.
Trey Mancini had an RBI hit in this one as well in his Cubs debut. Of course, all of these new guys are going to need to play well in 2023 if the Cubs are going to have a chance in the National League Central Division.
It is always nice to start 1-0 in baseball as it could set the tone for a nice season. Now, the Cubs will look to build on it on Saturday when they play their second game of the season. Justin Steele will face Brandon Woodruff in the game for the pitching matchup.
The Cubs are going to have all year to play well but it is nice to see them take a big home win over their rival in the first game of the year. The fun has begun.
