The Chicago Cubs need a lot of things to go right if they are going to have a good year in 2023. It is possible but the National League is loaded with great teams trying to win. It is going to be a very difficult year.

In order for the Cubs to reach some of their potential goals in 2023, they are going to need contributions from everyone.

That includes some of the players that haven’t become stars in the league yet. There are a few that need to break out in order for this team to be successful.

The Cubs have a lot of talent but there is a new height that the team can reach if these guys all do improve. These are the three players most likely to break out this year:

The Chicago Cubs need all of these guys to have good years in 2023.

1. Seiya Suzuki

Seiya Suzuki has shown signs of being an All-Star level player in this league. He needs to find a way to break out in 2023 because he has the talent to be a star.

He has already dealt with some injury troubles as he missed the World Baseball Classic because of an oblique issue. He would have been part of the great championship Team Japan had he gone. Now, his focus is on having a great year with the Cubs.

2. Hayden Wesneski

Hayden Wesneski was acquired by the Chicago Cubs in 2022 for Scott Effross. Cubs fans were mostly annoyed with the trade at first but they are going to be very happy with it soon enough as Wesneski is going to break out in 2023.

He had an amazing spring with a 3-1 record in five games and a 2.12 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP. He struck out 22 in 17.0 innings pitched. That is simply amazing.

It is just spring training but this 25-year-old stud has the stuff to get lots of outs in different ways at the MLB level. Big things are in store for him.

3. Nick Madrigal

A lot of people are down on Nick Madrigal right now but they weren’t a year ago. When the Chicago White Sox traded him to the Cubs in 2021, people loved it on the North Side. Craig Kimbrel wasn’t good for the White Sox and the Cubs had this Madrigal kid to work with now.

Well, he isn’t going to be playing second base anymore because of the fact that Dansby Swanson moving in to play shortstop will push Nico Hoerner over to second base. Now, it is time for Madrigal to find a home somewhere else on the diamond.

If he is going to stick around with this team, he is going to have to find a way to break out in 2023. That could include some time as a backup, a third baseman, or a designated hitter. Either way, he needs to break out in order to stick around. He has the talent to do so. All of these guys do.
