Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Ryan Poles does a masterful job filling holes
By Ryan Heckman
In the seventh round, the Bears somehow find themselves ending their draft haul with a couple of Nittany Lions, making Jaquan Brisker smile from ear to ear. First up, the Bears add a reserve center in Penn State’s Juice Scruggs.
Just for a minute, let’s appreciate just how awesome that name is. It is by far one of the draft’s best names, so let’s give it up.
Scruggs has ideal size for a center, at 6-foot-3 and just over 300 pounds. He has a strong, dense frame and isn’t easily pushed around. The reason he’ll drop is because of his lack of quickness. That’s an area of improvement he’ll need to work on in order to stay in the NFL long-term.
Lastly, the Bears grab a backup tight end to pair up with Cole Kmet and Robert Tonyan, snagging Scruggs’ teammate, Brenton Strange.
At 6-foot-4, 253 pounds, Strange offers average size at the position. But, he’s not going to come in and light the world on fire in the passing game. The reason Chicago is drafting Strange is mostly due to his blocking skills.
Strange is a willing and capable blocker, and to get a guy who is a phenomenal blocker in the seventh round makes this pick well-worth it. For a team like the Bears who run the ball well and often, Strange will offer some highly-versatile traits as more of an H-back type player.
