Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Ryan Poles gets selfish and obsessive
By Ryan Heckman
Cole Kmet finally broke out a bit last year. The Bears also just recently signed veteran tight end Robert Tonyan, but even so, the Bears add their third tight end in the fourth round when they draft Michigan’s Luke Schoonmaker.
Yes, it’s another Big Ten pick. This is just how the cards fell, but the Bears should be thrilled with the value thus far. Schoonmaker might start out as the fourth tight end on the depth chart, but it won’t take him long after his rookie year before he steps up and gets plenty of usage.
He’s regarded as one of the top five tight ends in this year’s class, and is one heck of an athlete. Schoonmaker stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 250 pounds. He’s a multi-sport athlete and has played several positions over his football career, including quarterback, so he’s an intelligent guy.
Because he’s played several positions, Schoonmaker understands the mentality of doing whatever it takes to win. He’s a willing blocker, which is one of coach’s top priorities when they add a third tight end. Some of the younger guys don’t want to block, or don’t know how, and Schoonmaker isn’t one of them. He’ll come in and have an impact right away, even if it is in the ugly aspect of the game at first.
