Chicago Bears Mock Draft: A post-David Montgomery edition
By Ryan Heckman
You thought the Bears were done at wide receiver after trading for D.J. Moore? Think again. Poles is just getting started and will jump at the chance to add even more talent at any position. Here in the fourth round, it just so happens that the best player on the board was Houston wide receiver Nathaniel Dell.
The smaller Dell, standing 5-foot-10, is absolutely electric with the ball in his hands. He lines up mostly as a slot receiver and excels in shorter yardage type situations, but can take those quick passes to the house in a hurry. If given the opportunity, his speed does allow for him to beat defensive backs deep at times and make a big play.
Dell gives the Bears speed and quickness in the slot; just one more weapon for Fields and the offense.
Finally, we come to the Montgomery replacement. The Bears once again draft a player who won’t have to travel far, as Illinois running back Chase Browns comes into the fold. Brown was a fan favorite for the Illini during his time in college and should slide right into the RB2 role in Chicago as a rookie.
Standing just under 5-foot-10 and weighing 209 pounds, Brown is more of a one-cut runner who can make a move between the tackles and get to daylight in a hurry. He ran his 40-yard dash in a strong 4.43 seconds, so he does have the speed to get to the next level in a hurry.
Mixing him in with Herbert could give defenses fits, as both of them have that sneaky ability to make a cut and get upfield quick. If Herbert ever went down, Brown does have the experience as a volume runner to take on the bulk of the load. Last year, he ran 328 times for over 1,600 yards and 10 scores with the Illini.
