Chicago Bears Mock Draft: A post-David Montgomery edition
By Ryan Heckman
The Bears signed former Tennessee Titans defensive end DeMarcus Walker as one of their first free agent moves, but they still have to beef up that front. At number 11 overall, the best player on the board is by far and away Pittsburgh defensive tackle Calijah Kancey.
One of the things you’ll hear about Kancey as the draft comes closer is the knock on his size. However, there have been some comparisons to guys like Aaron Donald and John Randle.
If you’re telling me the Bears are getting anyone close to either of those guys, then this is an easy pick. Kancey stands 6-foot-1, weighing 281 pounds, but he is as explosive a lineman you’ll find in this draft. He shoots the gap in a hurry and packs a strong punch to get to the quarterback and make plays in the backfield. Immediately, the Bears’ defensive line is improved.
Dare I say… with everything going on with Jalen Carter as of late, this might even be a better long-term pick than the Bears somehow landing the Georgia product.
One other area the Bears have to address in a hurry is at offensive tackle. They have now seen the likes of Mike McGlinchey, Kaleb McGary and Orlando Brown Jr. sign with other teams. These were three of the top targets for many Bears fans, but Chicago did not end up with any of them.
In the second round, the Bears go offensive tackle by snagging North Dakota State’s Cody Mauch. Chicago is getting an absolute tank, and an old-school type player in Mauch. He stands 6-foot-5, weighing 302 pounds and prides himself in the physicality in his game.
Mauch is an absolute mauler for a tackle and shines brightest in the run game. If he gets momentum, and gets his hands on a defensive lineman, that man ain’t going anywhere. This is a slam dunk pick for a team in need of a starting tackle.
