Bears News: This free agent signing will really help the offense
The Chicago Bears have spent a good amount of money this off-season. They know they aren’t going to win the Super Bowl next season but they do believe that they can improve. If they do that, it will help them in the future as they continue to stack talent.
One thing that is important for them in 2023 is giving Justin Fields some help. They have already added a few weapons to the group but they will always welcome more. Well, they decided to make another good signing on Thursday.
Former Green Bay Packers tight end Robert Tonyan is coming to the Chicago Bears on a one-year deal. He is a local kid that now gets to come to play for the Bears. This is a great thing for both sides as it will help everyone’s game.
Tonyan got to play with Aaron Rodgers. He can bring some things that he learned in that system to the Bears which could be great for everyone as they try to get better. Justin Fields will really benefit from adding a guy like this.
The Chicago Bears added Robert Tonyan to their offense on Thursday.
Another player that is going to benefit is Cole Kmet. He is another tight end that is on the younger side still. He took a big step himself in 2022 and now 2023 could be even better. In a two-tight-end set with Tonyan, they could thrive.
Having more than one good tight end will also take the pressure off of both Kmet and Fields. This position is pivotal in offenses moving the ball in today’s NFL.
With DJ Moore, Darnell Mooney, and Chase Claypool as the top three receivers this year, these two tight ends will round out a nice set of weapons on offense. That is exactly what Justin Fields needs. So, what is next in terms of building this team?
Building the offensive lineup is huge. They should not settle until they are completely comfortable with the group that they have on a week-to-week basis. With two good tight ends, it will be easier.
David Montgomery is also headed to the Detroit Lions as a free agent which is an issue. They don’t have a true number one guy but there is plenty of off-season left for them to figure that out. They could make a trade, a signing, or use a draft pick on someone they like.
All in all, this move to add Tonyan is great for the Bears. He is going to be a big part of the offense as long as he stays healthy. Both on the field, off the field, and in the huddle, he will be a great asset. Ryan Poles is doing a fine job so far.
