Bears News: David Montgomery is headed to a new NFL home
The Chicago Bears made a great choice when they selected David Montgomery with their third-round (73rd overall) pick out of Iowa State University. He came in and became a good running back for them right away as they were moving off of Jordan Howard.
He never became one of the five best running backs in the NFL or anything like that but he was above average which was all they needed out of him. Unfortunately, most of his tenure in Chicago was him playing on a bad team that couldn’t move the ball in the passing game.
The running game was as good as it could be because of him but it was limited because no defense was scared of their passing attack. Now, he became a free agent and has already found his new NFL home.
He is going to remain in the NFC North but in an entirely new city as he will go from the Chicago Bears to the Detroit Lions.
The Chicago Bears won’t have David Montgomery in 2023 and beyond.
This is a big move for him as that Lions team should be pretty good in 2023. In fact, there is a chance that they are the best team in the division for the first time in a long time. He is getting a three-year deal worth 18 million dollars. To be honest, that is a great move for both sides.
The Bears are going to have to deal with Montgomery for the next three years twice a year as long as he remains healthy. That is not ideal but they felt that they didn’t want to bring him back. He isn’t completely unreplaceable but now they need another running back going into 2023.
They will probably draft one at some point unless they pull off a crazy trade or something like that. We are still in a climate where running backs are cheaper because they come and go much quicker now.
From a football point of view, it should be a lot of fun seeing him expand his game on a better team. However, it would be nice for the Bears to start winning so fans don’t have to be sad about losing a good player like Montgomery.
