Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Haul for no. 1, alpha wide receiver secured
By Ryan Heckman
Staying with defense for the second pick in a row, the Bears add yet another edge rusher in Bowling Green’s Karl Brooks. The Bears had a hard time getting to the quarterback last year, and this is an area they have to overhaul.
Brooks joins Herbig as another rookie pass rusher for the Bears defense, and he is a lot bigger, standing 6-foot-4, 295lbs. While Herbig is the quicker rusher, Brooks is the stronger, bigger rusher who can bull rush his way into the back field. Last year, Brooks totaled 10.0 sacks.
The Bears are going to have to make a decision on David Montgomery when free agency opens, and if they opt to let him go, then they’ll need to replace him via the draft. One option they could take is drafting UAB running back DeWayne McBride.
At 5-foot-11, 215lbs, McBride is a decent-sized two-down back who can offer the Bears some physicality near the goal line and in short yardage situations. He is a fairly patient runner who uses his vision well in order to mislead potential tacklers.
The biggest cause for concern is ball security, and if he can shore that up, he’d fit real well in the Bears’ scheme next to Khalil Herbert.
