Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Haul for no. 1, alpha wide receiver secured
By Ryan Heckman
In the third round, the Bears kick things off by selecting Wisconsin Badgers edge rusher Nick Herbig. Historically, drafting a pass rusher or linebacker out of Wisconsin will work out the majority of the time.
Herbig is a bit of a gamble for the Bears, mostly because he is a little undersized to play a true defensive end spot. He’s more suited as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 system, but his sack production and overall play style is hard to ignore.
Herbig is just 6-foot-2, 228lbs but has put up 18.0 sacks in the last two seasons. He is a maximum effort type of player, and his motor is infectious.
Ideally, the Bears can keep Kyler Gordon in the slot as he played well there over the second half of last season. If that’s the case, they’ll need another outside starter. Kindle Vildor has been better than he was to begin his career, but an upgrade would be beneficial.
Drafting the six-foot Garrett Williams out of Syracuse would certainly help. He is a physical cornerback that plays through contact and possesses that swagger which any good cornerback has to have.
One thing that especially stands out about Williams is how he is such a strong asset against the run, in addition to his coverage skills.
