There is a world where the Chicago Blackhawks get a first for Patrick Kane.

The only way that the Chicago Blackhawks are getting a first round pick is if they get the 2024 edition from the Rangers. They already traded their first in 2023 to the St. Louis Blues for Tarasenko.

The 2024 first is obviously slightly less valuable than the 2023 because this draft is much deeper. However, that pick could be much higher next year depending on how the New York Rangers do after going all in this year.

It is no guarantee that they are dominant in 2023-24 based on the makeup of their roster. The Hawks could benefit from that if this was the route that the two teams went.

Chicago probably wouldn’t get much more than the 2024 first though. The future fifth round piece in addition might be considered but they would need to get pretty lucky for that selection to move the needle.

Getting a first round pick for Patrick Kane should be considered a must. However, the Hawks played themselves against the wall by waiting too long. It also doesn’t help that Patrick Kane has all of the leverage in this situation.

That is why a trade like this would feel like an elite return. We’ll certainly see soon if a return like this is over what the Hawks actually end up getting.
