Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Surprise team trades for number 1 pick
By Ryan Heckman
In the second round, the Bears go back to the trenches, but this time on the defensive side of the ball. This is an area that needs to be revamped, and desperately. Just a few days ago, the team let go of Al-Quadin Muhammad after just one season in Chicago, and have also parted with bigger names like Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn in the past year.
Wisconsin’s Nick Herbig comes to Chicago as a starting pass rusher, who will work well interchangeably with Travis Gipson and Dominique Robinson; both guys who are better complimentary pass rushers than premier rushers.
Last season with the Badgers, Herbig totaled 15.5 tackles for loss, including 11.0 sacks. He gives the Bears the pass rusher they have been needing, and helps bolster a line that was (hopefully) revamped in free agency as well.
Replacing Sam Mustipher has to be a high priority for Poles this offseason, and that’s just what he does in drafting Minnesota’s John Michael Schmitz. As a third-round pick, Schmitz presents excellent value. Many outlets have him graded as more of a second-round guy, but this is just how the mock fell for Chicago.
To land a starting center right here, and one of the best interior linemen in the draft, is a gigantic victory for Poles and the front office. Schmitz is a highly intelligent player and does a lot of things well, but mostly wins with technique. He fits the zone scheme real well, which gives him an edge before even stepping foot on Soldier Field.
