Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Big OL trade, no. 1 pick lands a haul
By Ryan Heckman
Look, if there’s an Alabama or Georgia defender on the board in the seventh round, there’s a pretty simple rule: draft them.
Safety Demarcco Hellams led the Bama defense with 108 tackles last year, but he’ll fall in the draft mostly because he doesn’t have the coverage skills necessary to play free safety in the NFL. He fits mostly in a zone scheme and closer to the line of scrimmage, but this kid is a player.
He’s a physical tackler and unafraid of contact. Hellams plays real well against the run, too, being able to shoot gaps and diagnose those plays in a hurry. At this stage in the draft, you cannot go wrong by drafting a player of Hellams’ caliber.
With their last pick in the draft, the Bears select one of Coach Prime’s own in wide receiver Dallas Daniels, giving them a trio of rookie wide receivers to take into training camp with them.
While Daniels will likely be mostly a special teams guy, he is shifty and creative in the slot. Daniels will have to work for his spot on the roster with so many guys around him, now, but he does provide plenty of special teams upside and a possible option in 5-receiver sets.
