Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Big OL trade, no. 1 pick lands a haul
By Ryan Heckman
The top of this draft is all about building the trenches on both sides of the ball for Chicago. In Round 1, it was defense. Now, it’s back to the offensive side of the ball. The Bears already acquired Shaq Mason to start at one guard spot, and now they go after a starting offensive tackle in Tennessee’s Darnell Wright.
Standking 6-foot-6 and weighing 335 pounds, Wright has that prototypical, towering size at the tackle position. He is a powerful tackle who plays confidently in pass protection and also packs a punch in the run game. He would come in and immediately start alongside Braxton Jones. The only question becomes, who plays on which side?
Last season better be the very last time we ever see Sam Mustipher in a Bears uniform, because he was maybe the worst center in all of football in 2022. At pick number 54, the Bears once again go offensive line. This time, they select Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz, who takes Mustipher’s place right away.
Schmitz stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 320 pounds. He’s a strong, powerful interior lineman that fits really well in a zone running scheme, which is what the Bears like to use. Schmitz has that physical mentality you need to really be a bully on the inside, but he’s also a highly-intelligent player.
Now, the Bears have two starting tackles in the fold, along with two starting interior linemen. Maybe, Teven Jenkins sticks around and plays at the other spot.
