Chicago Bears who could stay or go in 2023: David Montgomery, RB

This is the big one. David Montgomery has become a fan favorite since joining the Bears as a third-round pick back in 2019. He is the only one on this list without Poles’ fingerprints on him, therefore it would not be a surprise to see the team allow him to walk in free agency.

But, Montgomery almost feels like a necessity for Chicago. This offense’s only continuity and consistency came in the run game, and Montgomery had a lot to do with that. Bringing back a back field with Montgomery, Khalil Herbert and Justin Fields could be the catalyst to this Bears offense taking the next step.

Why not bring back a guy who has been, at times, the heart of this offense? Pairing he and Herbert for the next couple of seasons, along with Fields, gives the Bears, well, the NFL’s top rushing attack. This is the trio that combined to lead the Bears to being the number one overall rushing team in the league last year.

With 4,849 yards from scrimmage in his four seasons, Montgomery has done nothing but produce. Using him as the short yardage and early workhorse paves the way for a faster, more electric Herbert to break loose once the defense is worn down a bit later on in games.

it would be a sad day to see Montgomery leave, but also understandable from a financial perspective.
